What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin ceramics or plastic fixed over the front of your teeth to change their colour or shape. These tooth coverings can be affixed singularly for individual issues, or a complete set can be arranged. Care is always taken to ensure that they look natural and befitting of your current smile.

A highly skilled lab technician crafts our porcelain veneers from a model provided. The procedure is usually irreversible, because it’s necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth to accommodate the shell.

Who Should Consider Them?

Dental veneers are a viable option for those who feel their smile has some uneven surfaces, or are chipped, discoloured, oddly shaped, unevenly spaced, or crooked.

Porcelain veneers can mask undesirable cosmetic aspects of your smile. These could be stains caused by smoking, injury, or a root canal procedure, and are ideal for masking discoloured fillings in the front teeth. Patients with gaps between their front teeth or chipped or worn teeth may consider them.

Long-term thinkers should also consider that this option has a much longer life expectancy and colour stability than bonding alternatives. They’re highly resistant to common staining agents, including coffee, tea, red wine, and even cigarette smoking and can help you avoid paying for teeth whitening.

What to Expect

Typically, the end-to-end procedure requires at least three appointments:

  • Diagnosis & Treatment Planning: In the initial meeting and consultation with one of our cosmetic professionals, you can discuss all aspects of your prospective treatment. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to express any particular queries you had about your treatment, including the dental veneer cost, procedure processes, and even supplementary bookings for treatments. We’d also encourage prospective patients to consider our cosmetic teeth whitening regimen beforehand. This will brighten your natural teeth and garner a much brighter impact after all is said and done.
  • Preparation: During the preparation visit, the teeth are lightly buffed to match the thickness of the dental veneer. Usually, about half a millimetre of the surface is removed. This process may require a local anaesthetic, depending on the circumstance. During the same visit, a regular cleaning takes place, and impressions are made of your current teeth. From the mould, the fabrication of your bespoke dental veneers can begin.
  • Bonding: The bonding visit lasts about one or two hours. In this appointment, the dental veneers are placed on the tooth surface with water or glycerine on the teeth to check their fit and get a sense of the shade or colour. While they rest on your teeth, they can be adjusted with various shades of cement to match the colour of your surrounding natural teeth. To apply it properly, the surface is cleansed with specific chemicals to achieve a bond. A special cement is then sandwiched between the teeth veneers and the surface. A particular laser or heating mechanism is then implemented to harden the cement and secure it.

Post Procedure

During a two-week period of adjustment, you may notice a change of size and shape in your smile. It is vital to brush and floss daily and keep an eye for any issues. After one or two weeks, you’ll return for a follow-up appointment. Porcelain veneers are reasonable reproductions of natural teeth, not perfect replacements. It’s not uncommon to see slight variations in the colour upon close inspection, but this is common with natural teeth.

During your appointment, you can ask for follow-on treatments or adjustments as needed. After which, your fresh and bright smile will be ready to show off to the world.
